Lester R. D. Stilwell, LTC (Ret) USAF, age 92, made his last flight check peacefully from this life the evening of August 18, 2014 at home. He was surrounded and supported by his family and caregivers during the last days of his life. Lester was born in Yakima, WA, and has lived in many places of this country and abroad because of his career in the USAF. He has been living in the Sacramento area since being stationed at McClellan AFB 6/1956. In 8/1965, after raising one son and two daughters, Les, and his wife Eva Mae, retired from serving 24 years in the Air Force where he had logged in over 20,000 hours of flight time during his military career. His military career included flying the Hump in India to China on 180 missions during 1943 - 1944 and participating in Operation Vittles for the Berlin Airlift with 270 missions in 1948 - 1949. His love for the German people continued throughout his life with many friendships established there. He also continued his flying career with World Airways and Airline Ground Schools as an instructor for some years before settling down in Carmichael where he lived the remainder of his life in the home he and his wife had built together. He was very fond of the groups, Fly-to-Lunch Bunch, Quiet Birdmen and Daedalians, and missed his time with them right up to the end. I'd Rather Be Flying! is definitely a fitting slogan for his life. Lester is survived by children (and spouses): Dale Ann Palmer (Bob); David Lynn Stilwell (Darcy); three grandchildren; and six great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his wife, Eva Mae Hughes Stilwell and his daughter, Terry Lee Stilwell. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Lester's honor to the Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan, Mailing Address: 3204 Palm Ave. McClellan AFB, CA 95660 or online: www.aerospaceca.org Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2014, @ 2 PM @ Town & Country Lutheran Church, 4049 Marconi Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95821 -- Corner of Norris and Marconi Avenue. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sacbee ... sgl8P.dpuf
